Tips for Using the Medicare - Approved Prescription Drug Discount Card:

- The program is voluntary and temporary.You must be entitled to or enrolled in Part A and/or Part B Medicare to be eligible, and not receiving medical assistance prescription drug coverage at the time you enroll.

There are no income qualifications.

- You have to request an application for any Medicare-approved drug discount card.

- Please visit with your pharmacist first to make sure they accept the card you choose.

- You can have one Medicare-approved drug discount card at a time.

$600 Transitional Credit Eligibility

- If you are entitled to and/or enrolled in Medicare and have no other prescription drug coverage and have income of:

less than $12,569 if single
less than $16,862 if married

you may qualify for a $600 credit towards most prescription drugs.

- Assets are not counted in qualifying for the credit. The discount/credit is provided at the time you obtain the prescription from the pharmacist

- You will have to pay a coinsurance of 5% to 10%, depending on income

- Medicare pays the annual enrollment fee for you.

Which Cards Will My Pharmacy Accept?

- Check with our pharmacist before signing up for discount card.

- Pharmacies will generally only take one or two of the 50 plus cards that Medicare has approved.

- Pharmacies may be reluctant to accept cards that require patients to use mail order for refills.

- Pharmacies may be reluctant to accept cards that pay only at the pharmacies cost of medicine.

Signs of Possible Fraudulent or Misleading Prescription Drug Discount Cards:

Be suspicious if prescription discount card representatives:

- Call you at home

- Solicit you through door-to-door sales

- Claim they are "from Medicare"

- As for bank account information

- Ask for social security numbers

- Ask for Medicare numbers

- Make automatic withdrawals from bank accounts without permission

- Request a monthly fee (only annual fees allowed)

- Complete paperwork without your input

- Say they DON'T need your signature

- Request an extra fee for "additional benefits"
